What happens when a soul is separated from corporeal form and spiritual consciousness and broken? There are fates worse than death.
Also called Shattered Souls are abominations that wander eternally in the veil between Life, Death, and the Void.
Narcomantic Voidweavers have often encountered these phantasmagoric essences in their practices, and an unlucky few have been doomed to become them.
What’s a Voidweaver?
Voidweavers are Narcomancers who can sever their soul from their spirit and body in order to traverse the Void-the nothingness-that exists in opposition to Life and Death.
Due to it’s timeless nature, the Void can be very dangerous, and a loose soul is extremely vulnerable. Any number of horrible, unthinkable consequences can take effect if one is too careless.
What’s the Difference Between Spirit and Soul?
We exist in three forms: our bodies in the material world, our spirit in life and death, and our soul weaving it all together.
The Spirit is our consciousness, our individuality, it can transcend the veil between life and death and exist in both, our Spirit is everything.
Conversely, our Soul is the raw energy that breathes life into the spirit and holds us together. Yet, it is governed neither by the realm of life or death, for this reason a soul that’s shed it’s spirit and form can traverse the Void.
A Shattered Soul is a Soul that has been stripped of it’s bond to Spirit and Form, and is left to wonder the veil between the Void, Life, and Death. Shattered souls are fragmented, their pristine energy is tainted and corrupted-broken-forcing them to become unstable, and volatile. Being left to wonder in the eternal emptyness of the void, the soul can cannibalize, and become Shattered.
Souls are the essence of magic, the essence of being, they are governed by balance, and order. A Shattered Soul is broken, fragmented, it’s energy is tangled and tainted, and so the Shattered Soul seeks to complete itself, to become whole once more. Not out of any conscious decision, but simply because it must restore itself, the methodology is irrelevant.
The nature of a Shattered Soul, is precisely that it has no nature. Shattered Souls are not accountable to Order because they’ve been stripped of their ability to interact wholly with the balance, to be complete.
Shattered Souls become parasitic entities in their pursuit of wholeness, often they will seek out the complete souls of others and sap their essence in an attempt to strengthen themselves. They do not do so out of will, or choice, simply innate need to become complete.
Those unlucky few who become the unwitting hosts of Shattered Souls experience madness as their consciousness attempts to commune with the foreign essence. Shattered Souls first drive the spirit to madness, drain it, and can destroy it in the attempt of reaping strength from the host’s soul, severing the secondary soul in the process.
The host, still in possession of a spirit, will experience the eternal agony, and pain of their soul being fed upon. This perdition is worse than death, it is worse than perdition, because it never ends, even when the body dies the mangled spirit will endure the otherworldly agony.
It is said that the cure to such a monstrous fate, is to journey into the void, and therein sever one’s own essence from the shattered soul. Any such venture would leave the afflicted person at the mercy of the Keepers of the Veil. Without them to guide and anchor to, the afflicted soul risks becoming lost in the eternity of the void, and becoming a shattered soul itself.
Narcomantic Voidweavers know the risks of what they do and accept them. Going into the void is potentially laden with unforseen consequences, all deadly. It is not done lightly, nor in jest, it’s a serious practice utilized only with the utmost caution. Shattered Souls are not the only potential fate that can occur, nor are they the worst.
Never forget that magic, especially workings of the soul, is not without severe risks and consequences.
There’s too many misconceptions in this game of consequence.
